We are a non- profit organization founded in 1996 for the purpose of broadening our understanding of history, culture, and contributions of various groups in the town of Beaverdam, Virginia. For the past fourteen years about a dozen volunteers have been working to bring local history and culture about the little village of Beaverdam and the surrounding area. These volunteers have packaged this understanding with a coating of good food, games rides and good music. This has been a one-day annual event called Beaverdam Heritage Days celebration sponsored by the Beaverdam Heritage Days Foundation (BHDF).
After eight years of successful events held on property provided by Mrs. Elizabeth Trainham and the Gayle Family, interest in the project grew when Retta Spencer Smith approached the Foundation about potential use of a collection store antiques from her former child-hood home of Edgewood, located in the western part of Hanover County. This began the tribute to Retta‘s father Howard Churchill Spencer and the beginning of Beaverdam’s Pop’s Country Store Museum. Where to build the Museum became an important issue. BHDF member Pat Coffey contacted John Thompson regarding family-owned land in Beaverdam. This important donation from the Components of the Center Construction on Pop’s Country Store and The John Lewis Thompson Learning Center began in December 2009.The builder, W.C. Lang Jr. and crew have the building up and under roof. This new site will be where BHDF will be held October 10, 2010. The John Lewis Thompson Learning Center and Pops Country Store Museum honors two important families whose roots extend deeply into the history of Beaverdam This Center will serve to educate students and teachers by on site visits from the Richmond metropolitan area to better understand history and culture of the region.
The current leadership of the BHDF Board of Directors includes: Joe
